Everybody loves beautifully shaped lips, but lip injections can have both their positives and negatives.
Lumpy lips can be a side effect of lip augmentation caused by improper placement, too much filler, and improper choice of product or even poor aftercare by the patient.
Lips are highly vascular and are prone to bruising and swelling, however massaging by the injection specialist is mandatory immediately post lip injections as well as choosing lip filler that is appropriate and indicated for the lips.
The first few days after injection the lips can be swollen or bruised, and temporary lumps could develop but should resolve quickly. Most bumps after filler injections can usually be rubbed out during the initial treatment stage by the injector. Massaging lips after Juvederm is mostly optimal within the first 48 hours while the product is more malleable. It is not recommended that the patient massage the filler themselves, as it is possible to press too hard and/or move the filler into the wrong place
Most temporary lip fillers available to patients are Juvederm, Restylane and Teosyal. These lip fillers are made of up Hyaluronic Acid, which is a substance that has the advantage of being soft, effective at contouring, and reversible. If a patient has any lumps that do not resolve, then Hyaluronidase can be injected into the lips to correct any unevenness or lumpiness. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down Hyaluronic Acid found in lip fillers. This can take one or several treatments.
It is not uncommon after repeated lip filler treatments, that some bumps are related to the scar tissue that forms around the implanted gel.
Since fillers are introduced with needles, it can create small amounts of bleeding. This is irritating to tissue, and cause scar formation.
It is best to book a follow up appointment with your injector to evaluate the procedure, as they can adjust any residual lumps or bumps at that time.
In most cases, lumpy lips caused by temporary lip fillers are reversible and non-permanent.
