As with all expression lines, the diagonal lines on the sides of the nasal bridge that appear during actions such as smiling or scrunching the nose are commonly referred to as “bunny lines.
“Bunny lines” are worsened by the contraction of the transverse part of the nasalis muscle. When the muscle contracts, the skin follows, leading to dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles are typically caused by repetitive facial movements, like wrinkling the nose. They can occur even through the process of aging.
The good news is that bunny lines are easy to treat. Botox can safely relax the muscles responsible for “bunny lines”. Once relaxed, the overlying skin will become smoother and the lines less prominent.
The effect will take effect in 5-10 days and last between 2 and 7 months, depending on the Botox dosage used.
It is also said that another cause of bunny lines is repeated use of Botox to the glabella, the area between the eyebrows. This occurs when the muscles on either side of the nose become hyperactive to overcompensate for the lack of movement in the forehead and around the eyes. Celebrity watchers will play the guessing-game: “Has she or hasn’t she had Botox”. It must also be noted that many people contract the muscles of the nose as a natural part of regular facial expressions, smiling or squinting and therefore is not a telltale sign of Botox.
Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane or Teosyal could be used to fill in these creases; however filler would not treat the underlying cause, and could also make the bridge of the nose look a little wider.
