Belkyra Side Effects Belkyra is a prescription drug used to improve submental fat also known as “double chin”.

So what exactly are the side effects of Belkyra?

Common side effects include: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and hardness of areas in the treatment zone.  More serious side effects of Belkyra treatments may include problems swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.

One week prior to BELKYRA™ , it is suggested that one limit their alcohol intake as well as  refrain from using   anti-inflammatory medications.  This is to avoid excessive bruising. Once Belkyra is administered, patients may experience mild to moderate swelling, bruising, numbness or pain in the treated area. After treatment ice packs may be applied to the area for 15 minutes at a time if needed.

Some patients may want to schedule these treatments near the end of the week or on the weekend due to the downtime that is associated with this procedure.

Generally swelling is the most common side effect that patients will experience. This will occur after the injection and can last up to three days or more.  Bruising, some discomfort, itchiness, and redness usually accompanies the swelling.   Numbness or tenderness, or  a mixture of both under the chin, can last up to 2 months.

A majority of patients require between 2-4 treatments with Belkyra. Studies have also shown that side effects are lessened during subsequent treatments.

In July 2015, Belkyra™ was approved by Health Canada as a safe, non-surgical medical treatment for stubborn, persistent fat that accumulates under the chin.  Lasting Looks Anti-Aging and Laser Clinic in Toronto has been using Belkyra since it was first introduced to Canada.

Belkyra is the only treatment that reduces fullness of the chin area non-surgically, and permanently. Belkyra uses Deoxycholic acid in injection form to achieve this.

Dosing is based on a standard grading system. This type of grading system will also determine the type of fat, the quantity of fat,  as well as the size of the area being treated. Depending on the patient and the severity of their double chin, 2-4 treatments up to a maximum of 6 may be required to achieve maximum results.

Treatments are spaced 4 to 5 weeks apart. This allows for the full effect to be achieved before the next visit. Patients will see an improvement even after their very first treatment.  Once results have been successfully achieved, no further treatments are expected.

Contraindications of Belkyra

Anyone unhappy with the appearance of a double chin may benefit from Belkyra.  Belkyra is a very safe injectable treatment that has been approved by Health Canada to target the “double chin”. Belkyra works by dissolving the fat found in the double chin.

For a successful treatment, patients will be in good health and fully understand the non-invasive treatment plan. Any ethnicity and skin type can see effective results from Belkyra.

Contraindications to Belkyra include patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, those who have a bleeding disorder, as well as those who have an active infection or allergy to deoxycholic acid. In these cases, Belkyra should not be administered.

In addition, patients with excess skin or scar tissue under the chin may not be suited for the injectable fat elimination treatment. Caution as well, should be taken in patients who have had prior surgical or aesthetic treatment of the submental area as well.

Changes in anatomy/landmarks or the presence of scar tissue may impact the ability to safely administer Belkyra and obtain a desired aesthetic result.

It is imperative to let your medical practitioner know what medications, vitamins or herbal supplements you are taking and any medical conditions you have.

Belkyra Toronto – A New Non-Surgical Treatment for a Double Chin
